Mythbusters: Is Beer Good For Hair?
We already talked about Bella Thorne using beer to lighten her hair before, but here's the real question: is beer good for hair in general? It may lighten hair, but who knows if there are negative side effects that come with it, right?
So is beer really good for hair? In today's ZALA mythbusters, we'll explain whether or not this myth is true.
History of this 'myth'
Although it may seem strange to some, beer treatments are actually not unheard of.
Prior to Bella's stint, folks from the 90's were already familiar with this hair treatment thanks to a line of beer shampoos from a company called Back to Basics. The shampoos came in brown plastic bottles, similar to how real beer bottles look like.
Benefits of beer hair treatments
Beer is said to have a lot of beneficial properties for hair. This is largely due to its ingredients like malt and alcohol, as well as nutrients and protein that can be found in beer.
- Nourishes and strengthens hair
- Repairs damaged hair
- Restores moisture to your strands
- Helps regain hair's luscious state
- Makes hair shinier
- Tightens hair cuticles
Drawbacks of this hair treatment
However, do keep in mind that other people have reported experiencing negative results from beer hair treatments as well.
For one, beer may be too drying for some people. Depending on the specific brand you decide to use, it can have an alcohol content of up to 30%, which may be too harsh for some people's hair. Alcohol, in general, can strip away your hair's natural essential oils, which will cause your strands to appear limp and dehydrated.
Two, beer smell is not too pleasant for a lot of people. Even if you try to cover it up with perfume or hair spray, the smell will still be very noticeable. Now, it's up to you if you're fine walking around with the smell, but for people who are working in a corporate setting, this may not be the best DIY hair treatment.
Last but not least, beer can be quite expensive. Depending on how thick or long your hair is, you may spend a fortune just trying to maintain this routine.
Is beer good for hair?
In a way, yes, it can be said that beer is good for hair. It can transform your hair in ways you may not have expected. It can restore moisture, strengthen your strands, and prevent your hair from breaking too much.
That said, not everyone has good experiences with beer treatments. Some hair types may get even more dehydrated when using this treatment. As always, it's up to your discretion whether you want to try out a certain DIY treatment or not.
