1. Your skin is too dry

Although dandruff is usually caused by oiliness rather than dryness, sometimes you can get dandruff from dry hair as well. However, do take note that if dryness is your problem, the flakes tend to look different from the ones that you'll get from oily hair.

The best way to combat this would be to moisturize your hair and make sure that it extends to your scalp. This way, you can avoid getting flakes caused by skin on your head that's too dry.

2. You're not shampooing well

For many people, the real reason for dandruff is because they're not shampooing well. If you're someone who never really gets dandruff but occasionally gets a random bout here and there, maybe it's just because of this reason.

How do you shampoo hair the right way? Simply put, you use cold to lukewarm water, use gentle pressure to massage your hair roots and scalp, and make sure that you get all the shampoo and conditioner out of your hair before drying it.

And even if you're shampooing well, not all shampoos are the same. There are different kinds of shampoos for different hair types, and choosing the wrong formulation for your hair can cause problems that you don't want to deal with. For example, if you've got oily hair, you don't want to use a shampoo that's meant for moisturizing, as it can worsen your hair's oiliness. On the other hand, if you've got dry hair, you certainly wouldn't want to make your hair even more so.

3. You're dealing with oily scalp

Oily scalp is the real reason why many people get chronic dandruff. This dandruff is yellow in color and looks very oily, in addition to being very itchy.

One way to check if oily scalp is the problem is by seeing if flakes will come out by scratching. Dandruff that is caused by an oily scalp will usually not come out of your head by just scratching; instead, you have to pull it out as it sticks on the scalp.

If oily scalp is your problem, use a clarifying shampoo to try and lessen the oiliness on your scalp. Another homemade remedy would be to use a few teaspoons of baking soda combined with a cup of water.

4. You're too stressed

Still can't figure out the real reason for your dandruff? Here's one reason: maybe you're too stressed and you don't even realize it.

Stress can lower your immune system, thus making you more susceptible to health-related problems, like dandruff for example. One form of dandruff, called malassezia, is caused by fungi that reside on the skin. It thrives best when the individual is stressed since the immune system is much easier to penetrate.

To avoid getting this problem, you should also try to avoid the things that cause you stress. Try taking a relaxing walk out, or perhaps schedule a calm and tranquil time for reading. Another tip is to engage yourself in a relaxing hobby, such as yoga.
